I bought some smaller tiles to try in a rug inlay pattern with most of the floor being the 12 inch tiles. My wife wants this p. Does diagonal vs straight tile pattern really matter to home buyers. Homeowners often shy away from diagonal tile layouts also called bias layouts in a bathroom.

I will put some photos below. Now i am deciding between a straight pattern and a diagonal pattern. I ve laid it out both ways and am leaning towards straight but i d love to see some diagonal if anyone has any pics. While a diagonal pattern might seem logical if you are using big tiles for an expansive space such as a large kitchen or great room floor many people worry that diagonal tiles can look too busy in a smaller bathroom and if you are a diyer planning to install the tiles yourself you might worry that.

In most cases i find orthogonal square or straight as you call it to be more attractive than diagonal. I have laid out the floor tile in different patterns today. An exception is when the diagonal tiles are fields in a larger pattern. Another is where they create a dynamic variation in the overall effect by introducing other axes and alignments in the space.

I m using 20x20 tiles and the kitchen is is sort of split in 2 one side is the actual kitchen area and the other is the breakfast area split by the sink counter. Btw laying straight isn t easier than hopscotch because you will always have four tiles that need to meet perfectly in a corner with a straight pattern. Monica s photos do argue for diagnonal tile but i m wondering whether the reason the straight tiles don t look as good is that they are smaller with prominent grout. The area that is tiled with 12 x 12 floor tiles is about 4 5 x 5.

Tiles installed diagonally are at a 45 degree angle to the walls. If you don t dare to lay diagonally do hopscotch because it will hide your mistakes. The main difference is looks. I think diagonal would be perfect for your room.

In a straight tile installation the tiles are oriented the same way as the walls in the room with each side of the tile parallel.
